In the summer of 2020, we used a slide to give out books when we weren't allowing guests on the bus. Thank you to Andrew Webb of WVIR NBC29, who came out to film the Donor Diapers distribution. Donor Diapers sets up at different locations in Charlottesville every month to give out diapers and wipes to families who need them.
We are a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt public charity. If you would like one, we can issue a tax-deductible donation receipt. Any amount helps. Thank you so much!
Yes, the books are free. The Free Book Bus was founded in October 2018 to bring books to children who have barriers to accessing books, and to help families build quality home libraries.
Our primary focus is children and young adults who cannot easily afford and/or access books in Charlottesville, Albemarle, Nelson, and surrounding areas. Our secondary focus is encouragement of reading for all. We give free books to every child or teen who visits the bus. We also give out hygiene and personal care products at certain stops.
Yes! Some bus stops are for certain clients only, such as schools or food pantry distributions. Others are open to the public. Check our upcoming stops page for more information about when you can visit.
