The Free Book Bus visits both private and public preschools. We can usually complete a visit for the whole school in one day. At most smaller visits, we give out two books per child.
We can accommodate +/- 300 students in a full-day visit (with distancing protocols in place). It works well for each class to have about 15 minutes to select books. I can send a sample schedule on request.
The book bus is for older kids too! We have around 1,400 books on the bus including chapter, graphic, anime, YA, adult, nonfiction, art books, and more.
We visit the Southwood Boys & Girls Club on the first Wednesday of the month, and other clubs throughout the year. These recurring visits are great, because we get to know the kids and can also take requests.
The book bus visits apartment complexes like Hearthwood and Timberland often. We give out books and art supplies to kids, teens, and adults at these visits.
The book bus visits PACEM every few months to give books to their adult guests. This is our only stop dedicated to adults. We take requests, and often give out more than two books per person at this stop.
Once we have settled on a date and time, we can talk about logistics. The bus will need a place to park where kids can get on the bus safely, and for larger events, space for book tables (ideally covered). PTO volunteers are very helpful for larger events.
Currently, we are letting kids on the bus in small groups, with masks, and all windows open. This is working well. For larger school events, book tables are useful so that there is not a big line to get on the bus. These procedures will be adjusted as needed.
We would not be as successful without our dedicated volunteers! If you are interested in being a volunteer (we especially need people with daytime availability), please get in touch!
We will talk with you before your event about your photo policy. We often blur out individual faces, but if you do have media releases, it is always nice to show faces! We will do whatever is best for your school or organization.
You can refer to our event policy here to learn more. Our first mission is to go where people might have less access to books, and our second mission is reading encouragement for all. We do not attend events that support a particular religion or political party.
Just give us a call or email and we can talk about it! SometimesI am able to schedule a stop quickly, and other times, I may need a few weeks lead time.
Most of the time, we give out two books per person at our stops. At large school events, we will often only give out one book, so that everyone has a chance to find an interesting book.
We are in the process of buying a newer bus with a wheelchair lift! New event scheduling will resume once we get the bus renovated and ready for guests. Thank you for visiting!
